What is the difference when calibrating my ReliOn Ultima meter with ReliOn Ultima Test Strips that includes the Lot 00000 calibrator bar?
Calibration is performed in the usual way with previous LOT numbers of ReliOn Ultima Blood Glucose Test Strips. The calibration code on the calibrator and the meter is now “LOT 00000” whereas the lot number on the test strip foil wrapper, carton and Instructions for Use is different. It is no longer required for you to check that the lot number “00000” on the meter display window and calibrator matches the lot number of the Instructions for Use and the foil packet. You’ll need to check that the lot number on the test strip Instructions for Use matches the test strip foil packet, and that the meter display and test strip calibrator matches LOT 00000.

Do I need to calibrate my ReliOn Ultima meter?
Yes, the ReliOn Ultima meter needs to be calibrated whenever a new box of test strips is opened. Each box of test strips in blue foil is supplied with a white calibrator coded LOT 00000 and the meter is calibrated in the usual way.

What color is the test strip foil packet supposed to be?
ReliOn Ultima Blood Glucose Test Strips with the Lot 00000 calibrator are in blue foil, whereas other ReliOn Ultima test strips are in gold foil.

Are my ReliOn Ultima Test Strips in blue foil different from those in gold foil?
The test strips in blue foil are used in the same manner as those in gold foil. You will have to calibrate your meter when you first open the box of ReliOn Ultima Test Strips in blue foil. Follow the instructions for calibrating your meter that are enclosed with the test strips.

My meter display shows LOT 00000. Is this correct?
If your new box of ReliOn Ultima test strips are wrapped in blue foil, and your white calibrator bar shows LOT 00000, then your meter display is showing the correct Lot number.

After calibrating my meter with the new calibrator, will I be able to access my previous test results stored before calibration?
Previous results are stored on the meter’s memory, even after calibrating to a new box of strips. The meter’s memory works exactly as before the calibration.

How do I do a test?
With the test strip still in its packet, insert the contact bars into the test port of your monitor. Make sure that the contact bars are facing upward. Push the test strip in until it stops. The monitor turns on by itself. The following sequence appears in the display window: 88.8,CAL, the three-character calibration code and then rdY. Remove the test strip packet. You may use the packet later to discard the used test strip. Make sure the calibration code displayed on the monitor matched the calibration code on the calibrator and the test strip insert sheet for the test strips being used. Your monitor is now ready (rdY) for you to apply a drop of blood to the target area of the test strip. The test will start automatically when the sample is detected. Do not press the button. The countdown begins and your blood glucose result is displayed in a few seconds.

How do I calibrate the meter?
With the contact bars of the calibrator facing up, insert the contact bars into the test port of your monitor. Gently push the calibrator in until stops. The monitor turns itself on, 88.8 appears in the display window. CAL (for Calibration) then appears in the display window followed by the three- character calibration code. CAL and the calibration code alternate in the display window.

How do I open a test strip? Why do you use foil pouches on strips?
Open a test strip by holding the test strip vertically and grasping at the notch. Tear downward and diagonally to expose the contact bars of the test strip. Grasp the contact bars and pull the test strip halfway out of the packet. Save the test strip packet for disposal of the used test strip. Each test strip is sealed in an individual foil packet to protect it from air and moisture. In addition to ensuring accuracy of glucose monitoring, it provides a convenient alternative to carrying a vial of strips.

Why is the meter reading HI or LO?
If the meter displays "HI", the blood glucose value may be above 600 mg/dL or 33.3 mmol/L. It is suggested that you test again with a new strip to confirm the result. If the meter displays "LO", the blood glucose value may be below 20 mg/dL or 1.1 mmol/L. Check that the target area of the test strip was completely filled with the blood drop. It is suggested that you repeat the test with a new test strip to confirm the result. Follow your healthcare professional's instructions.

What are Control Solutions for? How do I get control solution?
ReliOn ® Glucose Controls Solutions are used to test the performance or your monitor and test strips. They are not necessary to conduct a test. ReliOn ® Glucose Control Solutions can be obtained through ReliOn ® customer support at 1.800.992.3612.

What does CK KE mean?
This message appears when a blood glucose result is 300 mg/dL (16.7 mmol/L) or higher. The display alternates between CK, KE and the blood glucose result. It is suggested that you repeat the test with a new test strip to confirm the result. Follow your healthcare professional's instructions.

How do I recall my last reading?
Press and hold the button firmly until "Recall" appears in the display window. Immediately release the button. The most recent result will appear in the display window. To recall the next glucose result, press and release the button again. Continue this procedure to obtain the remaining results stored in your monitor's memory. Once you have scrolled through all of the results, press the button to turn off the monitor. The monitor automatically turns off after one minute.

How do I recall my last reading?
Press and hold the button firmly until "Averages" appears in the display window. Immediately release the button. Your one-week average will appear in the display window. Press and release the button to see your two-week average. Repeat to see your four-week average.

When do I replace the battery?
The battery life of your meter is approximately 4,000 glucose tests. It is time to change your batteries when you see a message that says "Batteries". See your instruction booklet for the correct way to replace the batteries.

Why aren't there strips in the meter package?
We wanted the meter to be as affordable as possible so that more people could afford to buy meters to test their glucose. By excluding strips from the monitor kit, we are able to better manage our inventories and pass the cost savings on to the consumer.

What would cause my blood glucose readings to vary from one test to another, even though I feel fine?
Normally, your body's rate of metabolism changes constantly throughout the day, and the level of blood sugar changes with it. For people with diabetes, their blood glucose level usually stays within a constant range, but does not remain the same all of the time. It is important for people with diabetes to understand that their blood sugars can change quickly for different reasons such as; the amount and type of food eaten, exercise, illness, medications, etc. People with diabetes should visit their physician regularly to identify their best blood glucose target range and to adjust their diabetes management as necessary.

How can I make it easier to get a drop of blood?
Your new ReliOn® Ultima monitor is designed to test your blood glucose using a very small blood drop. Even so, some people find it challenging to acquire a blood drop. Here are some tips to help make it easier:

  • Wash your hands with warm water, and rub them together to warm them up.
  • Gently massage your hand and finger, moving from your wrist to below the spot you will lance (but do not squeeze directly on the spot you will lance)
  • When lancing, press your lancing device firmly against the side of your fingertip
  • After lancing, massage your finger gently towards the spot you just lanced (but do not squeeze too hard)
  • If you are still having difficulty getting an adequate blood drop, call the ReliOn® Customer Care line, toll-free, 1.800.992.3612 for more advice.
