What is the best technique for taking a temperature?
In
order to perform the proper temperature technique, gently pull back the
earlobe before inserting the thermometer for best results. Tugging on
the earlobe provides a direct line to the ear drum to maximize the accuracy
of results. Insert thermometer into the ear, press the "On" button.
Gently rock the thermometer back and forth so that the probe tip scans
the ear drum. Listen for the ready beep and then press the "On" button
again for measurement. Four beeps indicate measurement is complete
which takes 1 second. A poor technique can cause low readings.

How do I keep the device clean?
Wipe off the casing of the unit with a soft, dry cloth, or with rubbing
alcohol. When dirty, clean the lens only using a soft, dry cloth or cotton
swab. Do not clean ANY part of the unit with detergent, thinner, or benzene.
Do not immerse in water. After use, be sure to discard used lens, and
replace with a new one, so that the unit is ready for use again.

What
do the following "display" messages mean?
PC - The Lens/Probe Cover is not on the Probe. Attach
the Lens/Probe Cover, then take a measurement.
AA - Temperature
of the unit is unstable. Make sure the unit remains at the room
temperature where measurement will take place. Allow 30 minutes
to stabilize before using. Normal operating range: 50° F
to 104°F (10°C to 40°C).
AL - The temperature of the unit is 50° or below
which is outside the operating range. Make sure the unit remains at room
temperature where the measurement will take place. Allow 30 minutes to
stabilize before using. Normal operating range: 50° F to 104°F(10°C
to 40°C).
AH - The temperature of the unit is 104° or above
which is outside the operating range. Make sure unit remains at room temperature
where the measurement will take place. Allow 30 minutes to stabilize before
using. Normal operating range: 50° F to 104°F(10°C to 40°C).
Er.1 - Service may be required. Turn on the unit again.
If "Er.1" is displayed again, the unit may require service. Call the Service
Department at 1-800-634-4350.
H - The measured temperature
was above the range of the thermometer. The Probe may not have been properly
positioned in the ear. The probe must be snug against opening of the
ear. Be sure the lens cover is clean and the ear canal is not blocked
with earwax.
L - The measured temperature was below the range of
the thermometer. The Probe may not have been properly positioned
in the ear. The probe must be snug against opening of the ear. Be sure
the lens cover is clean and ear canal is not blocked with earwax.
"F" or "C" Flashes
with battery symbol - Indicates
low battery. Replace with new battery. Replace with DC 3 Volt

Can I hurt the eardrum of a child by inserting the ear thermometer?
The probe has been designed to ensure proper fit in the ear. You can
place the probe firmly into the ear canal without risk of harming the
eardrum of even the smallest child.

Is the ear thermometer accurate?
Clinical research has shown that the ear is an ideal site for taking
body temperature. The eardrum shares blood vessels with the hypothalamus,
the part of the brain that controls body temperature. Therefore,
the ear is an accurate indicator of internal body(core) temperature.
An ear temperature, unlike an oral temperature, is unaffected by factors
such as talking, drinking, and smoking.
We recommend that you practice with the
ear thermometer on yourself and family members when you are healthy.
This way you can improve your technique and feel more confident
of the measurements you take when a family member is ill.
