Each tube has 15g of carbs and 38g of total weight according to the front panel. What are the additional 23g? Also, on the nutritional facts, it says that each serving size (1 tube) contains 17 total grams of carbs. This doesn't seem to make logical sense to me.
The total weight of the entire tube with the gel solution is 38g. 15g of that total weight is actually the dextrose monohydrate that is classified on the nutritional label as a sugar under total Carbohydrates. The other 2 carbohydrates that make up the solution are from the xanthan gum. In order for a gel to deliver 15 g of glucose, the solution has to have a ratio of 40/60 or 40% dextrose and 60% water, flavor rent, preservative (the 60% is mainly H20).
Our tubes are slightly overfilled to compensate for any residual gel that may not be dispensed from the tube. This way we can ensure that one receives all 15g if they ingest the entire contents of one tube.
A person is more at risk when having a hypoglycemic episode of not receiving enough carbs than if they receive some extra carbs.

Can I drink a soda or juice or eat cake icing or a candy bar, as opposed to taking ReliOn® Glucose Gel?
These products will bring your blood sugar up. However, since these products contain other compounds it takes longer for your body to extract the sugars from them. Also, these products are not measured. ReliOn Glucose Gel is measured to contain 15 grams of glucose and has a gel level indicator to help with smaller dosing.

How much ReliOn® Glucose Gel should I take?
ReliOn® Glucose Gel is premeasured to contain 15 grams of glucose per packet. The ADA recommends taking 15 grams of glucose (provided in one tube of ReliOn® Glucose Gel) and waiting 15 minutes before checking your blood sugar. You may want to consult your healthcare professional on what is the correct dosage for your individual situation. How much will ReliOn® Glucose Gel raise my blood sugar?
As each person is different, it is hard to generalize this number. ReliOn® Glucose Gel contains 15 grams of d-glucose that enters your blood rapidly. However, after using ReliOn® Glucose Gel, to keep your blood sugar from dropping again, you should follow up with a protein or a more complex, slowly absorbed carbohydrate snack.

When should ReliOn® Glucose Gel be taken?
For non-diabetics ReliOn® Glucose Gel may be taken at any time. For others that experience low blood sugar levels then ReliOn® Glucose Gel can help raise blood sugar to a more healthy level. ReliOn® Glucose Gel acts fast and will bring your sugar levels back up in a few minutes. Having a fast-acting source of glucose with you at all times is the best way to ensure you will have a rapid and handy way to counteract a low blood sugar reaction. Remember that low blood sugar will not just go away; without glucose, mild or moderate low blood sugar progresses to a more serious stage of hypoglycemia that could result in unconsciousness, or even coma.
